The following short story, which appeared in the May issue of the children's periodical Wide Awake, also serves as the title story in a book generally attributed to Ella Rodman actuality, the book Borrowed Plumes is one of several collections issued by the publishing company D. Lothrop & Co. utilizing material recycled from Wide Awake (which Lothrop also published). I believe this sentence uses 'borrowed plumes' in its literal sense.
